Not bad! Once again, really great that you put heart into this. I like the keyboard controls and that I don't have to click through everything (with the exception of menus). That makes things easier on my life .

The fact that you have multiple medals, decent animations and sound effects, keyboard shortcuts for attacks, etc. makes me think you're well on your way to becoming a grand game developer some day!

Btw, I couldn't find the credits while playing. Shame!

HeroPower responds:

Thank you :) It is actually really nice to hear someone mention that they liked, let alone used, the controls. I was worried people would just be lazy and just use their mouse. Glad you liked the game and used the controls :)

The credits button is rather small and appears when the title screen first shows up.

I liked it. I like the fact that heart was put into it. That's what matters and is largely missing from a lot of games in this time :)

I have a pretty powerful laptop and the dog slowed down significantly as the levels progressed. I'm not sure if that was intentional or not. Maybe your filters (or however you make the dog progressively more blind) are a bit CPU intensive?

Anyways, good job! Thanks for supporting both arrow keys and WASD. I know much larger projects which forget about that kind of thing :)

HeroPower responds:

The gradual reduced speed by the dog was intentional. Thank you for the kind review and also for taking the time to check out my other game.

lostabyss777's math is completely off.

I measure ~10 seconds per round at 500 points per round. That's 500 points / 10 seconds, or 50 points / second. 25,000,000 points divided by 50 points / second = 500,000 seconds. 500,000 seconds / (60 * 60 * 24), or a day's worth of seconds, gets you 5.78 days of continuous play.

That's really not bad at all! Something either a hacker could do (by fudging numbers) or an automated program could do fairly easily.

Back to my review...

I understand that you guys wanted to create the feel of an actual standoff, but it's just not fun. There's sadly no benefits to pressing anything other than "down" because the margins for error are just too small (or take too much time to discover). That means you end up with a constant difficulty and almost no learning curve (which gets boring if you succeed because there's no progression, or frustrating if you fail because there's no apparent reason as to why).

I get that it was a side project, but if you guys are going to go Pro, you need more than just polished aesthetics! You need to study the Theory of Fun!

That's some sound advice! Thank you =)

Great game.

I've been thinking about games to help teach people computer programming, and this is definitely one of them. The puzzles were interesting and fun. The music was just "blek" in my opinion. (I don't know why I mentioned Blek.)

The only complaint I have is that the game is short and the final level takes the learning curve to a whole different place. I feel like it was misplaced and short-sighted to put such an interesting level where you did simply because it was the last level of the game.

In fact, since the technique used to complete the level is non-obvious, it was disappointing that there weren't more levels after that expanding on the concept.

I can't bring myself to rate this game highly, even though it's a cute spinoff of the recent digging/mining games. The part about going through the center of the Earth and working up (even though unfortunately the mechanics don't rotate with it) was unexpected. (I don't know what I was expecting.)

But it just feels like a waste of time, and a short one. But it was an enjoyable experience while it lasted. I see a lot of potential with this kind of system, even though the user experience as a whole isn't that great, in my opinion.

I think it was a fun little puzzle game. You know, the fact is that this is the same kind of stuff most games present us, just in different forms. Some games test our reflexes as well, but most of the abilities to recognize and execute patterns are based on the same kind of stuff found in this game.

I thought this was a very fun, entry-level "boss-type" game. Players who are experienced gamers will not face any difficulty in the patterns, but the fact that they are relatively consistent and additive/mixed-in between bosses is a great and fun thing.

Each boss really had its own character. The upgrades and the low-level boss skipping made for a pretty smooth ride. Most of the later effort became figuring out how to effectively dodge the new or modified/enhanced boss pattern you encounter. The last boss was a marvelous finale to the adventure.

This is one of the few games where I feel as though the comic-book entry/finale was justified. It is often that people use those in a very cheap manner, but I think the graphics and UI aspects of the game were well-designed. No shortcut was taken that negatively affected the game's overall experience. (Ex: Would adding multi-directional sprites for the main character really make things more fun?)

The music also reminded me of a more arcadey-type megaman, with sonic influence in there as well. I'm not sure if those are musical influences for you at all, but it's the vibe I get. (Disco/techno themes combined.)

So I think it's superb for what it is.

I do have just a few things I wish were improved. The game's framerate seems to change on me at times. I'm not sure if that's due to my system or angry enemies moving faster. (It actually made things more fun.) The bullet collision is a little iffy. I don't know if it's pixel-perfect, but I certain hit things I didn't think I should have more than once.

The infinite play mode is a nice touch. The random enemy appearances as opposed to playing in linear order is just one of any number of things this game did to make the short play experience enjoyable.

A solid 5/5 is you.

Dude, noooooo!

I got to Blob-o but had no idea what to do, so I "back-tracked" and ended up on Earth with nothing left in my inventory but Wilson, and all the medals but game completion/inquisitiveness-stuff earned.

So, stuck, exhausting all possibilities I had foreseen, I talked to the skull again.

Oh, wait. I'm dumb. I definitely tried to walk into the space ship again, rather than touch it... ARGHH!!!!!!!! :(

Interesting game! I really liked the overall feel of it. Very well-polished UI. Definitely not the hugest fan of the controls, but then again, I'm on a laptop (against your recommendations). The guns are interestingly balanced. I don't know if they're balanced good or bad... they do provide a lot of different play choices.

While the UI is polished well and play is fun overall, game play didn't feel quite up to par. Whether it was the pacing, the over-friendliness of starting back at relatively short checkpoints, the gun play, or a combination of things... I suppose I think the game is too shallow, mentally. A young child could play it, and maybe enjoy it, but I honestly think they would have difficulty doing so.

So I do think it's a great game, but that somewhere along the balancing act, it fell some distance.

I almost died at the very end :)

Saved by the lick of half a heart. That, and a marvelous 6 damage reflective shield, bleeding damage from a mighty axe and a laughable over-abundance of potions. I'm not surprised who the antagonist was. The mighty shadow behind the scenes, however, was more devious.

I really liked having item info everywhere I went. Reading into the folklore was exciting. It's a shame that the final boss came so quickly. I hardly had time to think - let alone inspect who I was fighting - LET ALONE enter his room and check out his stuff. Maybe I'll play again, just to inspect the items!

Why did I step into the circle, though? Tolagal does not sound like the kind of place I'd want to rule over, especially with all the black magic floating about. I wish I had a choice in the matter! Something like the following:

"What will you do?

1) Step into the Circle.
2) Leave, and give your proof to the king."

1) "You have stepped into the circle of dark magic. A beastful immortality flows through you. This castle becomes your realm. From its darkest depths, even to its outskirts, you see and rule over all. As for the King, his time will come soon enough... (to be continued)."

2) "You make your way back to the kingdom, only to find that the king suddenly died in your absence. The prince takes no heed to your 'proof' and declare you a madman. A few rogue soldiers take your side, and you escape, but just barely. The boy-king is the least of your concerns. A greater darkness awaits.. (to be continued)"

I see you continue to update this. I hope something great awaits in the future :)
